Cowboy Christmas.

My friend Adam H had the idea for a communal art blog where every month the contributors all do a piece based on a single topic. And he called it the Super Awesome Art Challenge.

This is my first piece. Topic: Cowboy Christmas.

I tried something a little different this time by sticking to the single stroke line in illustrator and using it on almost every shape. I usually try to hide the illustrator-ness of it a little bit, but not this time. My feelings are mixed.

You can check out the original size to try to see some of the fine detail on his vest. Or even better, his boots. Good luck with that, they are tiny.

It's a golden time in a young boy's life.

Normally, I keep my personal musings to my personal blog, but today is special. Today I am 27.

Doesn't sound special? Consider the fact that my birthday is December 27th. That makes today my Golden Birthday™.

I've waited 27 years for today. But unfortunately, it's been kind of a bad year, this past month especially. So all I really want to do on my Golden Birthday™ is go to sleep. Maybe take a golden shower. Maybe.

But I will celebrate nonetheless. Party hardy and look forward to a new year, and the next 27 years of my life. Hopefully it's filled with good health, lots of art, violent videogames, fuzzy pets and fun times with my soon-to-be-wife, Lindsay.

Now I'm going to keep on keeping on.

The Little Match Girl.

Here's an illustration I did for the City Pages A-List section. It's for a performance of Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Match Girl, as preformed by Ballet of the Dolls.

yo grandma, you're a g-g-g-ghost!

I'll try to grab a City Pages and take a snap shot of it in context.

Shred that mighty axe, Santa Claus!

Hey there, why so blue? Don't you know it's December, the month of a pretty righteous dude's birthday? A dude who touches your life in special ways each and every day? Yup, you got it...

In a few short weeks I turn 27 years young! At long last, it's my golden birthday! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some new snowpants.

Oh wait, that's not why you're looking so glum? What's that? You need a great holiday gift for some young, cool dude and/or dudette? And you're too old and out of touch to know what's hip with the kids?

Don't fret! I have the answer!

A Target Gift Card! Of course! Target has everything for everyone! And the prices! So reasonable...

Hmmm... You should probably pick the gift card designed by me. Just to ensure every last ounce of awesome is delivered to the loved one of your choice!

notice the articulated arm. for rockin' so hard you bust your face.

original art, just for fun's sake.

Look near the checkout when you pick yours up. I found some there and near the Stationery section.

There are a lot of options for gift cards, to be sure,, but there's only one by someone you know and love (unless you also know and love Adam).

when it rains, the sky turns neon.

So what if you're a bat and you hang out in a grave yard... that doesn't mean you can't have a good time every once in a while.

stripes might not be slimming, but they sure do look good on you, bat!

November 27, 2008

what big eyes you have...

Uh oh. Another kitten has been added to the ever expanding roster of pets! Unplanned and unannounced, this huge-eyed, tiny black cat has charmed her way into a new home...

We've yet to find out if it's truly a boy or girl (although we suspect a girl), so right now it's been hard to name it...

olivia. if it's a girl. which might not be...

I'll post a real picture when I get back to Minneapolis...

...right NOW!

lovely snakes.

I was talking to a friend about ideas for something. This was one of the ideas.

it's a snake who saying something in a clever way.

I'm terrible at cursive. My grade school teachers lied to me. I never write in cursive.

Do you ever feel like your insides are about to explode in a cacophony of shattered bones and rainbow glitter?

yeah. me too.

early stages of a font.

One of the projects I'm working on is a handmade font. I'm trying to make it very high quality and versatile, and it takes more work than I might have planned.

Here's a sample. It should be changing quite a bit, though.

A skeleton in honor of scary Death.

It's Halloween soon! Here's a quick doodle of a skeleton. Skeletons are considered Halloween-related in some parts of the country (the good parts)!

scary up that posture!

The scary part about skeletons is that they are REAL! Believe it!

September 28, 2008

kids these days...

This another attempt (see previous) at drawing someone in motion, since I rarely draw anything that's not completely inert.

skate that board, you youthful hooligan!

I don't really like how it looks this small, though, so here's a bigger version: link!

Like always, I'll probably revisit it at some point in the magical future.

LBP Contest

News Flash! I love videogames and I am a staunch supporter of all things videogame related.

I especially love games with amazing art design, like Shadow of the Colossus, Okami, Viva Pinata and most recently Little Big Planet, developed by Media Molecule.

LBP's mascot is SackBoy, who dresses up in tons of different outfits. Media Molecule are having a costume design contest.

I decided to enter. Here it is!

retro in more ways than one.

I was looking for some files on my computer today and found this...

win the game.jpg
win the game!

It's an except from a set of greeting cards I did a while back. You could've picked them up at your local Target... if I would have remembered to tell you about them when they came out.

But now they're long gone, sorry.

Maybe I'll dig the samples out of the closet and shoot pictures of them all or something. They had a little "get the ball in the hole" game built into each card. And they were pretty fun.

Five Alive.

I got a package in the mail today. It was 5 certificates from the Society of Illustrators L.A. It was a surprise to me.

I don't remember entering, but I guess I did. Five times. Go figure.

Whatever, I'll take what I can get. So party on! I made these strange blue dudes to celebrate...

five alive.jpg
this is a strange way to celebrate.

PS - I realize there are six dudes in total. I am only counting the little guys to represent the five.

run some more!

I was thinking about this all day, so I decided to play around some more. I guess I came back to it faster than I predicted.

baby blue mess.

looking at channels.

It was fun.

August 25, 2008

I drew this sketch today. I kind of liked it, so I gave it some quick atmosphere.

run. high fences, jump over park benches. when you see me coming get the f**k out the entrance.

I'll put it in the file of "might do something with it someday...."

(inspired by "Run" by Ghostface.)

August 16, 2008

I've been busy lately. This summer is kind of nuts. Sort of.

But I did manage to doodle these little dudes one day and then immediately forgot about them. Sorry dudes.

oblivious dinosaurs.jpg
we might have to postpone that basketball game, dudes.

I think it just wasn't going as smoothly as I might have liked, and I had real work breathing down my neck, so I just abandoned them abruptly. But I found them today, and I like them more now than I did that night.

So here they are. The need work, but you've got to love their "can-do" attitude.

where'd you get that cap?

Have you ever seen someone's work, then met the person and it all fits? Like there's a little bit of that person in everything they've drawn? It happens a lot.

For instance, I usually draw long torsos. Awkward hand positions. Facial hair. And, amazingly enough, pretty much every (person) I draw is ugly.

Today I decided I wanted to work on making people a little less ugly. No, not just a little less ugly, but entirely not ugly.

The problem is that in my mind, ugly = interest. When I have to make someone normal looking, I get bored and it doesn't turn out very interesting.

So I'm going to do some nice little drawings of people who are modestly attractive and don't stay too far from what I normally draw like. I'm going to keep it real simple.

Here's the first one...

normal person.jpg
what a fine young man.

I'd like to point out that this dude looks nothing like me. Well, except the whiskers. And maybe the hat. But that's it.

Also, today's lesson is that people are less ugly when they are based on nice shape (like a circle) and they aren't all lumpy... I'll have to write that one down.

Freakshow Extravaganza

I just sent this off to the printer. It's a promotional mailer for Sandbox Theatre to promote their new play, The Horse, the Monkey, the Bird and the Dancer.

The inspiration for the project was old circus side-show posters. The direction was to include all the titular elements in one image with a slightly dark and bizarre tone.

It got pretty dark. And pretty bizarre.

sandbox mailer
that's a 1/2 of a sexy lady.

July 3, 2008

A fox has a bushy tail. Believe it.

Let's go from pure ugly to pure cute! Zombies are pretty much pure ugly...

And fox (or foxes) are pretty much the purest form of cute! I would also accept Chinchillas, kittens who sit like little bread loafs and tiny piglets. All are very cute.

hey fox! get out of that snow! ...and into my hugging arms!

Return of the Return to Zombies...

Yesterday's post kept running through my mind. I was just playing around with a new technique I've been kicking around, but I know it could have been a little better.

Alright, it could have been a lot better.

I was bothering me all day, so tonight I decided to revisit the texture and color.

die everyday test 2.jpg
better. and by better i mean creepier.

Return to Zombies.

Things have been crazy lately. In a not-very-fun way. This past month has been a bit of a non-stop grind. I designed product at a breakneck pace, and spent a lot of my free time working. It was kind of a pain.

But I think the crunch is over and I hope to resume posting a little more regularly. Or maybe tending to other things I've overlooked lately...

Today I drew a tiny, tiny sketch, and within minutes it became this:

die everyday test black.jpg

Then I wanted to play around with some new techniques I've been thinking about. A few minutes later and I had this:

die everyday test.jpg

From sketch to posting, I think I spent 30 minutes working on it. I don't think it's bad for a random thought. I might revisit it and tighten it up. Or not.

Here's a second piece of Street Fighter themed artwork for the show we hung last week (this one will be slipping in a tad late... I left a space open).

It's Ryu. Man of the hour, tower of power. My favorite character to play as.

Just for fun, here's the quick sketch I drew in photoshop before I started to draw everything out by hand:

ryu sketch.jpg

It was just for general size and pose, not color or anything. I knew I wanted it kind of raw and rough, kind of somber and with very little color. I also decided to ditch the "magical" blue hand stuff.

Here's the final:

You can see a bigger and better version on my flickr page.

I'm hanging a show tomorrow. I did this for it:

May 25, 2008

christmas skull.

I'm working on a lot of stuff I can't post lately. Someday...

But this is something that was rejected. It was just a little element on a sketch, but I liked it enough to post it here in it's cute, scary, christmas-y glory.

I started a new Moleskine notebook. It's bigger and has no grid.

I'll be posting the drawings in A Day in the Life. I'm sure some will make it here eventually, though.

death ampersand taxes.

I've been spending all my time on a project I can't share. I should be able to when it hits the market... the sad part is it probably won't for a year or so. And by then I won't care anymore.

Between this unnamed project and my filing 2007 taxes, I've been way busy. A word to the wise; if you're freelance, file your taxes quarterly. It sucks to ignore the law. Duh.

But here's a little snippet from a piece I can share. I'm working on it for an upcoming show. It's about feelings. But more so, it's about Zombies.

I modified it to reflect the somber tone of this tax season.

April 14, 2008

A little bit of a big drawing.

I'm working on some awesome stuff. But I can't post it. Which drives me nuts.

But I can post this sneak peak of a large-scale drawing I'm doing.

I work on it every now and then when I need a break from the digital side of things, I figure if I work big enough, it will keep me from scanning it and finishing it up in the computer. I think the drawing is on a 20" x 30" piece of Arches.

April 8, 2008

Deep Down Delights.

Remember that Octopus from A Day in the Life?

I think he took a trip to the Neon Factory and came back looking mighty bright.

whoa! my future's so bright...

I was going to bring it into to Photoshop, but I thought that straight-up Illustrator fit the bill just fine. But, like always, I might not be done yet...

Bright Eyes.

I posted a drawing in A Day in the Life. It's of an octopus, and I really like it.

I want to try some different things with it, so I started playing around. Here's a sneak peak of one idea. It's totally random right now.

my, what lovely eyes you have.

I'll probably do a few different things with the octopus. I'm trying to get used to my new workspace...

See these icons?

Adobe CS3. Very slick, very sweet. But things are slightly different, and it throws me off my game. I feel so slow.

egg cakes for babies.

I'm not normally the Easter type, but this year my friend Chris C thought it would be fun to dye some eggs. So dye we did.

These eggs were made by (in order) myself, Lindsay, Chris C and Emily.

I can't say what these are, who they're for, or if they'll exist at all...

So for now let's call it a secret. A secret I might be pretty excited about.

I've been told I'm a tease. Go figure.

April 3, 2008

meow, purr, hiss and bite.

I'm bouncing between a bunch of little projects and pieces. Nothing can keep my attention for too long. I think it's the spring weather. I'm restless. It's awesome outside. I want to run out and kick a can or something.

work in progress...

This is something I'm working on. This progress shot isn't at all representative of what it will look like in the end. I just threw it together to disguise how rough it is right now...

I just wrote the first thing that came to my head. But now I kind of like it. Maybe too many R's in "purr," though.
