new site. new illustration. new bandana.

I'm working on a new site. It's not a total redo, but it's a pretty drastic change. It's pretty much all I've been working on the last few days, and it still might be a while before it's ready.

But this post isn't really about my new site, it's about what I'm wearing while I work on my new site.

I like scarves and bandanas, I wear one or the other pretty much everyday. Which is why Lindsay gave me the Mustache Bandana set (made by Burlesque of North America) for my birthday yesterday.

excuse me sir, do you have a dumbbell for me to lift. or a bicycle with one large wheel for me to ride?

Rad. Also, in a few days I'll be posting a new piece with a step-by-step of the various stages of completion. I just want to wait until the final product is out. Thanks for waiting.

W.I.P. (Work in Progress)

I was sitting here working on a new project, and I had the urge to clean house on my desktop.I started putting unfinished pieces of art into the "In Progress" folder I have to keep track of all the art I've started and want to finish. Someday.

Then I realized I had actually started a second folder called "New Art" that is also waiting for more attention.

Here's a screen capture of both the folders with all the pieces that have gone unloved and unfinished. They could stay that way forever. Maybe. Probably, I guess.

above : my poor neglected children sit quietly, tossed aside and forgotten. much like my real children, if i were i to have any.

But don't cry! Dry those big doe-eyes! Because for every piece that's fallen into the deep, dark recesses of the dreaded "In Progress" folder there's another that's blossomed into a kind-of-glorious and slightly-loved piece of art!

And that warms the cockles of my heart! It's also the meaning of Christmas, I think.

i should have been working.

Today as I was working on a fun project (more on that very soon), I was listening to A Tribe Called Quest's second album, The Low End Theory.

There's a part in Buggin' Out where Phife Dog says "Styles upon Styles upon Styles is what I have..." and for some reason I saw for a simple typographic poster in my head. So I made it:

But then I didn't like it. It's what I pictured, I guess. The color, layout and style of type* were all pretty much exactly like in my head. But I definitely didn't feel comfortable with it.

Sometimes I get the urge to do flashy, simple designs with bold colors. And I always realize that's not really my deal once I play around with it.

But I didn't want to give up and be a little cry baby who cries like a baby all the way to the baby store when I need new baby dipe-ies for my baby butt. So I thought about what I could do that would make me like it?

So I did this:

And now I feel much better about the whole spur of the moment design-tangent.

And I can return this fresh pack of dipe-ies to the baby store.

*the font I used was created by Jonathan Calugi. Very talented.

i've got to get me one of those.

I'm back from (the first part of) the holidays and a way awesome trip to Mexico.

While in Mexico, we had a crazy encounter with a giant, ferocious Ghost*. It was totally spooky. You wouldn't believe me if I told you.

After we narrowly escaped it's icy death-grip of Ghosti-tude, I was left wishing I had a nice, warm Ghost-Proof Suit. For next time.

whoa! i hate g-g-g-ghosts! but i do like regular ghosts. either way you slice it, a ghost-proof suit couldn't hurt.

* No actual Ghosts were enountered in Mexico. It must have been some seaweed that touched my foot or something.

November 23, 2007

see? monster.

I got close, but this isn't finished. The Thanksgiving holiday snuck up on me. And it's a crazy one.

I'll be on the road all week and the week after I'll be in Mexico.

If I didn't post it now, it would have been a while. So here is a Sea Monster, in progress...

too much ice cream.

November 11, 2007

it's raining mathematic-based lines.

i hate it when i get caught in a vector storm without an umbrella.

I made this just to experiment. Now that I've added the vector lines, I might change the color...

November 4, 2007

don't smoke. it's a joke.

It's been kind of quiet here lately. I'm not free to post most of what I'm working on, so it's hard to get an opportunity to post anything at all.

Heck, even A Day in the Life is a little slow.

I have been playing around a lot, though, experimenting and usually ending up with a big pile of lame.

But here's something I made that I actually think is cool. So huzzah.

it's not easy being green blue.

October 23, 2007

Dr. Hotpants.

Lindsay was not happy with my DieEveryday Bunny. She demanded I fix him.

see? it was just a scratch!

There you have it. I'm a certified doctor. Call me Dr. Hotpants.

cry baby.

what a cry baby. and not the johnny depp kind, but the diaper kind.

October 21, 2007

cute die everyday

I'm working on a cute Easter collection. This is what happened when I lost my train of thought. I mainly blame videogames and Rock & Roll.

I've actually been thinking a lot about Die Everyday. I'm developing what it should become and I have two ideas. I just need pick one and go with it. Anyway...

this will not end up in the final easter icon set.

...don't tell Lindsay about this, either. She would be mad.

October 17, 2007

burger time.

Here's a new one. I feel like I've been doing so much delicate work lately, I just needed to draw something that I didn't have to worry about correcting mistakes or being clean.

dude just want's a veggie-burger.

Notice : I've been doing some "realistic-ish" drawings lately. Quick sketches, like the one above.

If you've been paying attention, you know I've been posting them in A Day in the Life.

But they are out character for A Day in the Life, which was started as a home for my new diverging drawing style (back when it was new). So I'll be moving those posts over to this blog over the next few days. Because I'm anal and bothered.

Just an FYI. For the imaginary person who reads my blog.

October 9, 2007

Here's something... It's something alright. I just needed to play around and unwind.

Maybe you originally saw it the A Day in the Life post a while back.

October 1, 2007

pig pen?

what a man. what a man. what a mighty good man.

(check A Day in the Life for the original sketch.)

September 28, 2007

fight it.

I needed a little break from product design to do something, you know, fun. J/K. But only kind of.

It's coming. i can feel it already. i hate it.

September 24, 2007

a little too personal.

Dear Diary,

Alright, I know I said I couldn't show you what I'm working on. But you and I both know I can't keep a secret from you!

So just to show you I care, I'm going to give you a super-secret sneaky-peaky.

A tightly cropped, out of scale, mis-colored, out of context sneaky-peaky. One that, in no way, could be at all incriminating...

ohhh, so naughty!

So there you have it. I feel better. You do too, right?

And if you're feeling like that's not enough of Chris H to go around, be sure to keep checking A Day in the Life. 'Cause, you know... that's kind of my other art blog... Not that I'm a double timer... I just need variety, baby!

Update on things. Things about me.

This past weekend Lindsay and I went to the Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago to represent for Drawl Graphic. It was a lot of fun, and very busy.

We shared a booth with our friends Isara and Chris S of Polaire. Isara's sister, Kapan (who makes fly jewelry under the moniker of Belle Tulip) was also there for part of the time.

We also brought some cute stuffed animals (aka ity bitys) that were made by Chris C to sell in the booth.

Most of my past couple weeks and have been spent preparing all the "merch" for the fair (tons of new stationery...), hucking said merch, and then recovering from the trip.

I'm also working hard on a designing some product for a big project. Unfortunately, I won't be able to post it here for quite a while. It's for a certain national retail chain and I don't think they're hip to the whole "open exchange of ideas and artwork on the web" thing.

But fear not! I am working on a couple of fun, personal project when I have any spare time. And I'll be posting those with reckless abandon.

September 6, 2007

Cookie Layout Fun.

I put together the accompanying page for the Monster Cookie illustration I did previously.

Here's a mockup of the layout.

eat up.

I need to adjust some of the text, (I under-anticipated the bleed), and I need to see it printed to make sure everything looks alright color / contrast wise. But I think I'm considering it done otherwise. Until I change my mind.

Cookies? COOOO-kies!

We're in the process of making a collaborative dessert cookbook. The whole thing should end up being all black / white / pink. It ought to be mighty fine.

This is my first pass for my Monster Cookies recipe, which is the cookie I always wanted to make when I was a kid.

when i was a kid, i was always disappointed that "monster cookies" never had much to do with actual "monsters."

I expect to do more on it, but that's the starting point.

August 28, 2007

Cool calm and rational.

Do you ever feel like you've been strapped to a desk for too long and all you want to do is flip your desk and smash your chair into a wall?

yeah, me neither.

Hmmm. Anyway. I've been looking at some people's artwork lately that makes me want to get a little loose. Maybe it's because it's hot in my studio but I feel like my clothes don't fit right today.

August 26, 2007

Die Everyday

I started a new website. Another one? Why? Mainly because I loved the URL I thought up and I had to buy it.

I proudly introduce!

What treasures will this new site hold? Could be anything!*

On an unrelated note, I am working on new gift cards and testing different paper for large art prints. So as soon as I'm happy with the quality they'll be available at the usual places (Renegade Craft Fair, Design Collective, the Drawl Graphic Etsy store, etc...).

* - could also be nothing...

Who's that dude(tte)? : Part 2

I did some more playing around today. I'm avoiding doing real work today. It's cold and rainy. So that's my excuse.

dark and moody. just like my high school trapper-keeper.

whoa! .... i don't really have anything else to say about that.

August 18, 2007

who's that dude(tte)?

This week was hectic. Now that it's the weekend and I'm finally able to catch my breath, I wanted to relax and zone out, just draw and mess around. Now that I'm done, I'd say it's definitely influenced by Lindsay.

lindsay said it looks like my sister...

I might do more with it. I might not. It didn't really have a purpose in the first place. So next time I want to just chill for a minute maybe I'll pull it back out.

poker night.

I made a poker night invite for DG Inventive, here's the remixed blog version (there's a lot of blank space for writing on the actual invite...)

royal flush? more like foil mush, right?

And here's the line up of characters...

a fearsome king indeed.

queen of the crop.

that's a mighty fine 'stache, jack.

That was a fun project...

August 14, 2007

invite THIS.

Here's more invites I made for DG Inventive. They are for a young girl's birthday party and a pool party, respectively. They were supposed to be fun, breezy little illustrations with flat color. Huzzah for fun.

i was sixteen once. and I nearly lost my driver's license before i turned 17. fact.

pool party? i wish i were invited to a pool party once in a while. but alas...

So there you have it. I hope you consider buying a set for your next Sweet Sixteen / Pool Party.

August 8, 2007 the rough.

Here's a couple more gem patterns. I probably should have specified in the previous post, but the target audience is "teen girl"...

another gem-y pattern.

dizzy-ing coordinate.

I'm working with predetermined color palette, if you were wondering. Although I've been known to use pink in my work (kind of a lot, I guess) I usually don't use it in so many shades. And with so much purple.

August 5, 2007

Atari (aka "Boo-Too)

My dog Atari is one righteous dude.

he's a real swell guy dog.

PS... This is the counterpoint to my previous post about my other dog, Twink.

August 4, 2007

sowing seeds (bones).

I've been posting bits and pieces of this piece when I could, but it's finally all together...

I'm not positive it's 100% finished, but it's darn close.

the bringer of bones. sowing the seeds of the dead. and stuff

I plan to sell it as a 13" x 19" print at the upcoming Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago. Drawl Graphic / Polaire represent.

(p.s. Believe it or not, this is my 100th post. I can't tell if I expected more or less...)

July 31, 2007

a melon of water.

I made this for DG Inventive / Paper Prince tonight. It was quick, fun and cute. Just like me.

a sweaty watermelon slice.

That was refreshing.

July 30, 2007

my enemies are always dropping thier bones.

Here's some bones I'm making for the illustration I'm working on every so often in my (nonexistent) free time.

don't mess with a dude.

July 29, 2007

I really liked the diamond shape I used in the previous posts, so I've been using it to play around with some patterns.

I work in iterations, so I ended up with about 50 variations. But I think these are my three favorites.

ooooh, neon-y.

ooooh. kind of screenprint-ish

just like my man Aladdin; a diamond in the rough.

That's it for now.

July 23, 2007

go (further in)to hell.

EDIT : 1 hour later...
Posting this a few minute ago gave me the urge to play around with it. So here's an update!

those lines scream excitement. or they scream 45 degrees.

When originally talking about the Sandbox Theater's silent auction, we decided upon the slogan "go to hell for a good cause."

Immediately, I had the idea of what I wanted to do, but ultimately it wasn't right for the project. We went with a more circus-style poster, but I still wanted to explore my original idea.

So I did.

diamonds are a girl's the devil's best friend.

I'd like to add some more elements, namely a layer of white and maybe a second color. Just a simple graphic accent that will layer under / over the text and diamond to give it more of a screen printed feel.

I see myself making it into a gift card.

July 11, 2007

go there and die.

I just finished a mailer for Sandbox Theatre ( They're having a party / silent auction to raise funds for their new show, War with the Newts. The party will be at Hell's Kitchen Restaurant in downtown Minneapolis.

Hence the theme of the mailer...

no, you go to hell.

More on this (in a semi-unrelated way) to come....

Website Redesign

Last weekend I redesigned my site. The resounding response from the peanut gallery was "boo."

More specifically, it was "it's just not you."

Maybe there was some truth there. So I took all criticism to heart and did a re-redeign. Even though those funky, butt-loving nay-sayer's opinions shouldn't matter.

So huzzah! Visit to check it out.

(I'll be adding a bunch of new work at some point as well, but for now I was just focusing on the external coat of paint. And yes, "funky butt-loving" is a reference to the classic film, Rookie of the Year. I used that quote because "Pitcher's got a big butt! Pitchers got a big butt!" didn't work as well in context.)

Cute Fruit (Brute)

Here are some icons for a pattern I'm working on.

dude, you're making my hungry for a heaping pile of cute.

June 26, 2007

A Germ who can Hurl.

I'm sick, thanks to the stupid, dumb, sick, stupid-heads that were on my flight back from New York City a couple days ago.

I hate being sick, and I don't like lying around all too much, either.

To keep myself entertained, this morning I drew a germ and posted it in A Day in the Life.

Then I got bored again, so this afternoon did another version of the lil' guy.

Viola. A ralphing germ who blows mighty chunks.

June 24, 2007

(snake) head in the clouds.

Just practicing. For fun. And for honor.

Ok, not for honor. Just for fun.

the snake in his natural habitat : wrapped around a dude's arm above the orange clouds but inside some pink ones.

June 23, 2007

ghosts like bones too.

Here's another part of the super-duper-natural illustration I'm working on.

omg. he loves that bone.

I was in New York City the past week for a Licensing Show, so I didn't get as much done as I might have otherwise. But the trip was way sweet, so no big whoop. I have a small flickr gallery of shenanigans and general tomfoolery from the trip. (I'll be updating over the next day or two).

June 17, 2007

Paper Bicycle site.

I just uploaded the new Paper Bicycle website. Paper Bicycle is the print / pattern resource Lindsay started recently. It's going to pretty awesome.

Right now the site is just a preview until we are ready to roll out all the features and stuff. The site was designed by both Lindsay and I. We bounced the design and layout of the site back and forth, and when we were happy with it I html'ed it up.

June 13, 2007

J Dilla.

J Dilla was, and still is, a huge influence on me. His non-stop creativity and insatiable work ethic made me respect him as much as his ability to create music that's at the same time beautiful, dusty, seemingly unpolished but entirely intentional and cohesive.

J Dilla passed away in February of this year. I finally decided the piece I wanted to make last night.

Sorry to be such a downer. Next post will be much more lighthearted, promise.

(edit : june 24, 2007 : changed color. slightly.)

June 10, 2007

Hey, another Paper Bicycle promo! I guess that's what happens when you have two ways of working, and you never want to hurt the other's feelings....

Once again, two versions. The one sans-text will probably end up being used, I just like playing around with text.

red. just like the hair on your stepchild.

text is totally cool. text messaging is totally uncool.

So that's it for today. Good times were had by all.
